Subsection 5.2.1 Writing Algebraic Expressions

Algebraic expressions may involve two or more operations.

Activity 5.2.1. Two Operations.

  1. Emma can order T-shirts for her soccer team from a catalog for $5 each. She pays a $4 handling charge on her order.

Some algebraic expressions involve more than one variable.

Example 5.2.1.

Choose variables for each unknown quantity and write the following phrase as an algebraic expression.

Solution.

The interest earned and the amount invested are unknown quantities, so we assign variables to represent them.
Interest earned: \(~~~I\)

The algebraic expression is a ratio: \(~~~\dfrac{I}{P}\)

Subsection 5.2.2 Evaluating Algebraic Expressions

When we evaluate an algebraic expression, we follow the order of operations.

Example 5.2.5.

Evaluate \(~\dfrac{12}{x-2}~\) for each of the values in the table.

Solution.

We substitute the given value for the variable. To simplify, we begin by subtracting below the fraction bar, then we reduce the fraction.

Example 5.2.7.

Evaluate \(~\dfrac{h-k}{2b}~\) for \(~h = 20, ~ k = 8~\) and \(~b=6\text{.}\)

Solution.

We substitute the given values for the variables, and follow the order of operations.

Subsection 5.2.3 Formulas

A formula is an equation that relates two or more variables, and usually helps us calculate some useful quantity. You probably know the formula for finding the area of a rectangle.

Substituting values for the variables on the right side of the formula is called evaluating the formula, just as we evaluate any other algebraic expression.

Example 5.2.9.

Find the area of a bedroom that measures 12 feet by 15 feet.

Solution.

We evaluate the formula for area by substituting \(\blert{12}\) for \(W\) and 15 for \(\blert{15}\) for \(L\text{.}\) Then we simplify the result.
\begin{equation*} A = LW = (\blert{15} ~\text{ft}) \times (\blert{12} ~\text{ft}) = 180 ~\text{sq ft} \end{equation*}
The area of the bedroom is 180 square feet.

Find the area of a sheet of notebook paper that measures 8.5 inches by 11 inches.

Here are some useful formulas, with examples of their application.

Distance.

The distance \(d\) traveled by an object moving at a constant speed \(r\) for a time \(t\) is given by \(~~\blert{d = rt}\)

Example 5.2.11.

A train traveled at 70 miles per hour for 3 hours. How far did the train travel?

Solution.

We are looking for a distance (how far). We have \(r = \alert{70}\) and \(t=\alert{3}\text{.}\) The distance traveled is:
\begin{equation*} d = rt = (\alert{70})(\alert{3}) = 210 ~\text{miles} \end{equation*}

Note 5.2.12.

When we use the distance formula, the rate, time, and distance must be expressed in compatible units. For example, if the speed is given in miles per hour, the time must be expressed in hours, and the distance will be in miles.

Profit.

To find the profit \(P\) earned or lost, subtract costs \(C\) from the amount of money taken in (called the revenue) \(R\text{.}\)

Example 5.2.13.

The Selectronics company took in revenue of $85,000 last week, and their operating costs were $38,000. What was their profit last week?

Solution.

We are looking for a profit. We have \(R = \alert{85,000}\) and \(C = \alert{38,000}\text{.}\) Their profit was
\begin{equation*} P = R - C = \alert{85,000} - \alert{38,000} = 47,000 ~\text{dollars} \end{equation*}

Average.

To find the average of several values, divide the sum \(S\) of the values by the number \(n\) of values:
\begin{equation*} \blert{A = \dfrac{S}{n}} \end{equation*}

Example 5.2.14.

Last week Kendal worked a total of 27 hours on six days. What was the average number of hours he worked per day?

Solution.

We are looking for an average. We have \(S = \alert{27}\) and \(n = \alert{6}\text{.}\) Kendal’s average work day was:
\begin{equation*} A = \dfrac{S}{n} = \dfrac{\alert{27}}{\alert{6}} = 4.5 ~\text{hours} \end{equation*}

A Quick Refresher.

The next two formulas involve percents. Remember that a percent is a fraction with denominator 100. For example,
\begin{equation*} 6\% = \dfrac{6}{100} = 0.06 \end{equation*}

Interest.

If you invest an amount of money (called the principal), \(P\text{,}\) in an account that pays interest at annual rate \(r\text{,}\) then the interest earned after \(t\) years is given by
\begin{equation*} \blert{I = Prt} \end{equation*}

Example 5.2.15.

Three years ago, you invested $400 in an account that pays 5% interest. How much interest has your account earned?

Solution.

We are looking for interest. We have \(P = \alert{400}, ~r = \alert{0.05}\text{,}\) and \(t = \blert{3}\text{.}\) The interest earned on your account is:
\begin{equation*} I = Prt = (\alert{400})(\alert{0.05})(\blert{3}) = $60 \end{equation*}

Percentage.

To find the percentage of a whole amount, multiply the percentage rate \(r\) times the whole amount \(W\text{:}\)
\begin{equation*} \blert{P = rW} \end{equation*}

Example 5.2.16.

Your insurance pays for 80% of your dentist bill. The bill is $120. How much will yourinsurance pay?

Solution.

We are looking for a percentage. We have \(r = \alert{0.80}\) and \(W = \alert{120}\text{.}\) The portion your insurance pays is:
\begin{equation*} P = rW = (\alert{0.80}) (\alert{120}) = $96 \end{equation*}

Activity 5.2.2. Using Formulas.

Use the formulas discussed above to answer the questions. First decide which formula is appropriate.
